Cascina Belmonte is located in Valtènesi, the hilly area in the south-western part of Lake Garda, between the present-day town of Desenzano and Salò.
Lake Garda is the largest freshwater lake in Italy. It is the northernmost place in the world where lemons grow. It is over 300 metres deep in places and over 50 kilometres long, causes winds, rainfall and mitigates harsh Alpine winters. A patch of Mediterranean flavours and colours framed by the Alps, on whose banks lemon, caper, citron and, of course, vine cultivation has flourished for centuries. Hills formed during the ice ages, when glacier tongues repeatedly pushed disintegrating material from the Alps towards the plains. Boulders, stones, gravel. Lean, gravelly, dry soil where farmers have always cultivated vines and olives. Over the centuries they were able to select a variety of olive tree, called Casaliva, and a variety of grape, called Groppello Gentile, that best suited the land.
