Mandatory Sanitization Of Boats On Lake Garda To Protect The Ecosystem

28 February 2026

The Regional Council has approved Bill No. 63, which introduces new rules for the sanitization of boats with the aim of protecting the ecosystem and the area’s economic activities.
Claudia Carzeri, Regional Councillor of Forza Italia and sponsor of the measure, underlined that “with the approval of Bill No. 63 we are taking an important step in safeguarding Lake Garda and its economic and environmental resources.”

The text specifically addresses two areas: navigation regulations and the protection of fish stocks, updating regional legislation concerning transport, agriculture, forestry and fisheries. The regulation provides for mandatory sanitization of the hull and propulsion unit before launching into the lake, with a certification system, identification sticker, and a register of authorized operators.

Carzeri emphasized that this is “a clear political choice: to prevent the introduction of harmful non-native organisms through structured measures of mandatory sanitization for boats coming from other water basins, with defined procedures, certified and subject to inspections.”

The measure focuses on traceability, uniformity of fees, and accountability of operators, protecting a fragile ecosystem and an economy based on tourism, professional fishing, the nautical sector, and local production. “Environmental protection is the condition for lasting development,” stated the councillor.

Finally, Carzeri highlighted the integrated approach adopted by the measure, which combines environment, transport, and economic activities: “Introducing uniform rules on an interregional lake such as Garda and building a system that brings together controls and responsibilities represents a significant step. The quality of our waters and the protection of biodiversity are non-negotiable priorities.”
