Monte Baldo: an area to protect and safeguard

We are proud to tell you that on 18/01 the documentary 'I guardiani della montagna' ('The guardians of the mountain') by Filippo Tommasoli, who with his Tommasoli Visual Factory is part of the Garda Green Club business network, was aired during the Rai 3 programme Geo.

The short film was made in the Garda Pre-Alps, between the provinces of Trento and Verona, and tells how in an area such as Monte Baldo, which is the scene of the phenomenon of residents abandoning their homes and is increasingly at risk due to the mass presence of tourists from the lake, undermining the natural integrity of the mountain, some families have returned to the places of their origins, carrying on the activities, maintaining the traditions of the past but looking to the future and innovation with the new generations, to ensure the sustainability of the area, preserving and safeguarding the integrity of this wonderful environment.

The 'guardians' involved have chosen to carry out their activities in the most sustainable way possible: a horticulture that respects the surrounding nature, carried out by hand and without the use of pesticides and insecticides; a family of winegrowers present on this mountain since the mid-19th century who use the methods of the past to cultivate, using natural and sustainable materials and without the use of tractors; a cherry tree cultivation with manual harvesting and selection to respect the environment and with their own apiary for pollination.

A dialogue between ancient traditions and more modern approaches is essential to find a new methodology that can ensure a balance between environmental and economic sustainability. Profit cannot be the only goal. Projects such as these are challenging but certainly satisfying, especially if we realise that, in doing so, we protect the land, landscape and nature around us, while keeping the traditions of the past alive.
