Record levels: Garda runs for cover, increased outflow

25 February 2024

The record water levels of Lake Garda have continued to rise in recent days following the precipitation phenomena of the last few days, with the lake reaching the (worrying) height of +137.3 centimetres above the hydrometric zero at Peschiera, which in fact corresponds to filling beyond the established maximum.

For this reason, the authorities in charge, i.e. the Garda Community and the Interregional Agency of the Po River, immediately took action to increase, or rather double, the outflow of water from the Salionze dam in the direction of the Mantuan territory, also in view of the further rainfall forecast for next week.

In fact, the outflow increased last Friday, 23 February, from 50 to 100 cubic metres per second, with about 60 cubic metres per second entering the basin from the tributary bodies.

In spite of a situation that must be monitored these days, the world has in fact turned upside down compared to last year, when at the end of February the levels were around 45 cm above the hydrometric zero, with an outflow of 9 cubic metres per second.
