Fine dust over the Po Valley

21 February 2024

What you see on the cover is the photo taken yesterday, 18 February, by the satellites of the European Union's 'Copernicus' atmospheric monitoring service.
A photograph that highlights how the levels of pollutants measured in the capital cities of northern Italy have reached impressive levels in this period, exposing residents and workers to environmental conditions that are harmful to their health.
This is a worrying picture, but one that does not surprise us: for years we have been denouncing the chronic emergency of air pollution that suffocates our peninsula and finds, especially in the Po Valley, its most vulnerable area, where the effect of intensive livestock farming and agriculture is also weighing heavily.
In light of the World Health Organisation's standards, which suggest limit values that are much stricter than the current legal values (and which represent the real objective for safeguarding people's health), the situation becomes even more critical.
To solve the problem of atmospheric pollution while protecting citizens' health, a synergy on several levels between government, regions and municipalities is essential: what is needed is a true urban revolution with structural and integrated measures that focus on increasingly sustainable mobility, local public transport, which must be given greater incentives, and at the same time providing concrete actions to combat other sources of pollution such as heating and agriculture.
