Garda Cycle Path: Province of Trento Acquires Casa della Trota

14 July 2026

GARDA TRENTINO – The Provincial Government of Trento has approved the acquisition of the Casa della Trota complex at the mouth of the Ponale stream. The transaction is worth €2.3 million.

The Provincial Government announced that, upon the proposal of President Maurizio Fugatti, it has authorized the purchase of the Casa della Trota complex, located at the mouth of the Ponale stream on the western shore of Lake Garda. The site is where the old harbour once stood and where the historic route leading to the Ledro Valley began.

The €2.3 million operation is considered a strategic investment combining environmental and landscape restoration, sustainable mobility, and the enhancement of the local area.

Fugatti: “Restoring Environmental and Landscape Quality”

"In addition to improving the continuity of the cycle path, the project aims to restore the environmental and landscape quality of an area of exceptional value, while also recovering the historic gateway to the Ledro Valley via the Ponale route.

This is therefore an initiative with a positive environmental impact, bringing improvements from an economic, functional and landscape perspective, while restoring the scenic value of one of the most spectacular locations in the Upper Garda area," President Fugatti explained.

Restoration of the Original Building

From an infrastructure perspective, the acquisition will simplify the route of the Garda Cycle Path by avoiding the construction of the costly tunnel section originally planned, replacing it with a more effective technical and economic solution.

In the longer term, the project will also make it possible to restore the original 18th-century building by demolishing the later additions, which are not protected and are currently abandoned.

The cleaning of the cliff face and the removal of the existing ruins will also allow the restoration of the historic path linking the lakeshore with the original Ponale trail.

The New Garda Cycle Path Route

Regarding the Garda Cycle Path, the acquisition makes it possible to implement a new route offering significant technical and economic advantages.

A new approximately 300-metre lakeside section will be built between the end of the Orione–Ponale Mouth Tunnel (UF2)—for which the executive design is currently being prepared—and the southern section of the Titani Tunnel–Aurora Tunnel (UF3.4.1), where construction is scheduled to begin next October, after the end of the tourist season.

The project represents an example of dynamic environmental compensation, where the impact of the cycling infrastructure is offset by landscape restoration. It forms part of the wider Garda Cycle Path programme, which recently saw the inauguration of the section between Riva del Garda and Torbole (UF18) on the northern shore of Lake Garda, as well as the completion of the Nago bypass.
