New sluice gates were recently installed at the Salionze Dam, located in Ponti sul Mincio, replacing those dating back to the period between 1942 and 1948. The operation, which took place on Tuesday 25 March 2025, marks a significant step in the modernisation of the system that regulates the level of Lake Garda and manages the flow of water towards the River Mincio. The new structures, each 10 metres long and about 3 metres high, weigh about 100 quintals, guaranteeing greater functionality than the previous ones.
Senator Mariastella Gelmini defined this intervention as ‘strategic for hydraulic safety’, emphasising the importance of the collaboration between the Lombardy, Veneto, and Trento Autonomous Provinces in the design and implementation of this project financed with PNRR funds. The Salionze dam represents a crucial element in the management of water levels in the Garda basin, where it is estimated that it can regulate up to 500 million cubic metres of water. An efficient regulating system is essential to prevent problems related to both too low levels and possible overflows.
