Over 3 million euros from the Regione Lombardia for the restoration of lakes

25 February 2026

LAKE GARDA – The Regional Executive of Regione Lombardia has approved, upon proposal of the Councillor for Environment and Climate, Giorgio Maione, the criteria for allocating grants aimed at restoring lake waters and protecting biodiversity.

The initiative allocates €3,170,000 for the three-year period 2026–2028. The call for proposals, scheduled for publication in April, will fund non-repayable grants with a maximum contribution of €300,000 per individual project.

Beneficiaries include Municipalities, Provinces, the Metropolitan City of Milan, managing bodies of protected areas, and Territorial Area Offices (ATO).

The action plan for lake restoration in Lombardy

The action plan is structured around three lines of intervention:
• biodiversity protection and enhancement measures: management and protection of animal and plant species, both native and invasive alien species;
• shoreline redevelopment actions: morphological restoration, creation of filtering ecosystems and buffer strips to improve the ecological functionality of lake shores;
• initiatives to improve sewer systems: containment of discharges and sustainable management of urban stormwater along lake shores.

Works eligible for funding

Eligible works include those carried out within one linear kilometer of the shores of lakes located in the provinces of Bergamo, Brescia, Como, Lecco, Milan, Mantua, Varese, and Sondrio.

Maione: concrete commitment

“With this measure,” Maione emphasized, “Regione Lombardia confirms its concrete commitment to safeguarding one of the most precious resources of our territory. It is not only about improving water quality, but also about investing in biodiversity and protecting our lake ecosystems. We aim to reward the planning efforts of local authorities that focus on naturalness and environmental restoration, ensuring a healthy and accessible heritage for citizens and visitors, with positive impacts both ecologically and socio-economically.”

Deadline for reporting

The funded works must be completed and the final reporting submitted by December 31, 2028.
