Seven starred chefs shine in Verona's gourmet sky. Novelty the 'Nin' of Brenzone

15 November 2023

A new Michelin star shines in the province of Verona. It is the one won by the 'Nin' restaurant in Brenzone sul Garda and its chef Terry Giacomello, born in 1969, a Friulian from Montereale Valcellina. The concept of the restaurant - 'Nin' in Friulian means child - was born in the spring of this year inside the Park Hotel Belfiore with the precise intention of building a space within a space, a sort of bubble with its own identity with a dining room overlooking Lake Garda.

The announcement
The ceremony for the presentation of the Michelin 2024 guide, which took place yesterday afternoon, 14 November, at the Teatro Grande in Brescia, did not reserve any particular shocks for the Veronese this year. And another medal was added to the six reconfirmations: that of 'Nin'.
Giacomello was born among the pots and pans of the family inn. Once he had completed his studies at the hotel-management institute, he began working as a cook in some of the world's most important kitchens: from Ferran Adrià's El Bulli to Andoni Luis Aduriz's Mugaritz, from René Redzepi's Noma to other temples of haute cuisine.
Then the return to Italy, to Alta Badia, to Milan and to 'Inkiostro' in Parma where he obtained his first Michelin star.

Futurist dishes
His is a very technical, unique, futurist cuisine that ranges across various disciplines, using typical products and traditional preparations reinterpreted in an innovative way.
The inspectors of the legendary "Rossa" who decided to reward his art say of him that "he has taken inspiration from his travels around the world to compose the NIN menu, and then ideally returned to Italy with the other course called Classici".
"His cuisine is a mix of modern technique and classical reminiscences, creativity and innovation", they add, "the room on the first floor overlooks Lake Garda, but only a lucky few have the privilege of having a table with a view: better to book in advance". Among the most popular dishes is the char from the lake with avocado gazpacho, olive juice and burnt mandarin peel oil, a dish in which acidity and sweetness are perfectly balanced thanks to the fragrant notes of mandarin.

The 'Stars' in the Veronese
A new star in our province is nothing new. Last year's recipient of the coveted award, reconfirmed in this edition, was the brigade of 'Famiglia Rana', the restaurant in Oppeano led by the Neapolitan chef Giuseppe D'Aquino. Also retaining their stars are 'Oseleta', in Cavaion Veronese, with chef Marco Marras, 'Vecchia Malcesine' in Malcesine, with owner Leandro Luppi, and 'Amistà' in Corrubbio di Negarine with chef Mattia Bianchi. Overall, there are five stars outside the city with 'Nin'.

Verona city
Keeping the name of Verona city high is the traditionally emblazoned chef Giancarlo Perbellini with the two stars of 'Casa Perbellini - 12 Apostoli' and the star of 'Il Desco' of chef Matteo Rizzo.
In total, stars shine in seven establishments in the Verona region: six restaurants with one star and one with two. Overall, the Veneto region can boast one three-star Michelin restaurant, 'Le Calandre' in Rubano (Padua) led by chef Massimiliano Alajmo, four restaurants with two stars and 27 monostars.
On a national level, the most prestigious guide in the restaurant world has this year awarded as many as 395 establishments: 342 restaurants with one star, 40 bistellati and 13 tristellati, including two new entries. The honour fell to Norbert Niederkofler, already a three-starred chef, for his new adventure at the 'Atelier Moessmer' in Brunico (Bolzano) and chef Fabrizio Mellino's 'Quattro passi' in Nerano (Naples).
